Poker games come in many different forms, but most of them share a common set of rules. The most popular form of poker, by far, is Texas Hold’em. Players are dealt two hole cards and five community cards in this game. The goal is to make the best five-card poker hand using any combination of the hole and community cards. Poker also uses the standard poker hand ranking system, so it is important to be aware of which hand wins in a head-to-head showdown. The basic poker game rules are as follows:
Hand rankings
The rules of most poker variants use these hand rankings. There are a few exceptions, however, as some variants use lowball hand rankings instead. In a royal flush, all five cards are of the same suit and in numerical order, starting with a 10 and ending with an Ace. A straight flush is similar to a royal flush but does not include an Ace as the highest card.
Four of a kind is when all four cards in a hand are of the same rank. A full house is when a hand contains three of a kind plus a pair, while three of a kind is when the hand contains three cards of the same rank. A flush is when all five cards of the hand are the same suit, while a straight is when all five cards are in numerical order but not of the same suit. Lastly, the lowest hand ranking is high card, which is when none of the above hands can be made.
Antes and Blinds
Antes are a mandatory part of many poker formats and an essential game element. Antes are typically posted by all players at the table, or by the big blind player in some formats.
Blinds create an initial pot and start the betting action in many card games. This is especially true of Texas Hold’em, the most popular poker game. In games that use blinds, each hand begins with the big blind placed one position to the direct left of the small blind. The small blind is always directed to the left of the dealer button, and the two players in these positions must put in predetermined betting amounts before each hand begins.
Limit
Many limit games use a structure where the maximum bet or raise is equal to the small bet in the early rounds of betting.
No-limit
Unlike limit poker, players can bet any amount of their chips at any given time. This makes no-limit poker an exciting and dynamic game, as players can bet aggressively and take bigger risks.
Actions
There are four different actions taken in any poker game. These are: call, raise, fold and check.
